Research Interests

Dr. Baughmannnns research interests center on the areas of molecular structure and bonding and how they affect a moleculeeâ?s reactivity. Three-dimensional structures are experimentally determined via X-ray diffractometry.

Biographical Sketch

Reared in the Kansas City area, Dr. Baughman is an avid fan of the Chiefs, Royals, and quality barbeque. After completing an undergraduate degree in chemistry at William Jewell College, he served as a medical technologist in the Air Force. Afterwards, he attended Iowa State University and obtained a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry with a research emphasis in X-ray Diffraction. Then, in 1977, Dr. Baughman joined the faculty at what is now Truman State University. Over the years he has taught a variety of freshman-level coursed, but mainly teaches courses in the Physical Chemistry sequence. (Physical Chemistry is that area of the natural sciences where chemistry and physics overlap.)

A member of numerous professional (American Chemical Society, American Crystallographic Association, Missouri Academy of Science) and honorary organizations [ΣΞ (research), ΣΠΣ (physics), many WhooĆ¢?s Who listings], Dr. Baughman has published 55 articles in peer-reviewed journals, made 53 presentations and had 24 posters. In the vast majority of these endeavors, students have not only been collaborators, but frequently co-authors. Over the years 30 research students have been mentored.

In addition to working with students, Dr. Baughman also enjoys playing softball, playing the French horn in both the Truman State University Symphony and French Horn Choir, singing in church choir, and is active in the Northeast Missouri Medical Reserve Corps.
