Two current Truman State University students serve as Student Preceptors for a Bridge Week course designed specifically for science, technology, engineering and mathematics transfer students. Taught by Truman faculty, this course provides transfer students with a comparable experience to Truman Week, which is an orientation week designed for first-year students.
Through their Bridge Week course, transfer students participate in appropriate social and orientation events organized for first-year Truman students, and they also participate in social and orientation activities crafted specifically for them. These include mixers with other upper-level majors and faculty, dinners with faculty advisors, workshops on resources at Truman’s Career Center, opportunities for research and internships, and private conferences with faculty from their chosen major on curricular expectations. By the end of the bridge week, the transfer students are prepared for the academic challenges that lay ahead, and they have a network of resources, acquaintances, and faculty that help support them.
Student Preceptors are responsible for helping teach the Bridge Week classes; preceptors receive a generous stipend and room-and-board allowance in compensation for their services.
