About Us

The STEP Office is dedicated to broadening participation in and increasing completion of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) degree programs. Through grants from the National Science Foundation, faculty and staff have enriched Truman through this office through innovative and entrepreneurial projects.

Our work is motivated by Missouri’s and America’s need for more young people who are trained in the STEM disciplines. Our economic competitiveness, nationally and internationally, rests on our ability to leverage talent and creativity in these fields. Through our programs, the STEP Office is producing the region’s and nation’s next leaders, innovators, and educators.

While our programs are varied, they are all united by our commitment to:

  • providing student-centered, transformative experiences that are integrative, interdisciplinary, inquiry-based, or international,
  • supporting projects that are backed by scholarship on how students learn or what enhances student engagement with STEM,
  • using performance and assessment data to drive our decisions,
  • working in a lean and efficient manner, and
  • being a model of professionalism on campus.

We believe that anyone can become a STEM professional, and we are working to broaden participation in Truman’s majors by reaching out to and supporting students from backgrounds that are traditionally underrepresented in STEM.

If you have any questions about our work, if you want to visit, or if you are interested in enrolling at Truman to become part of these exciting programs, please contact the STEP Office by stopping by Magruder Hall 3101, calling 660-785-7252, or emailing one of our programs directly at step@truman.edu or molsamp@truman.edu.
